This merit badge will not be completed the day of the event. Prior to showing up for class each Scout must have already earned the First Aid merit badge. If they have not earned the First Aid merit badge they will not be admitted to the class.

The following tasks will need to be accomplished outside of the classroom. Please note my comments and be prepared to discuss those items in class that you have done prior to the day of Merit Badge College:

  • Requirement 7:  Take part in an emergency service project, either a real one or a practice drill, with a Scouting unit or a community agency.  If a Scout brings in a statement signed by his Scoutmaster or authorized representative verifying this was done, I will sign it off.

  • Requirement 8b:  Take part in at least one troop mobilization.  Before the exercise, describe your part to your counselor.  Afterword, conduct an "after-action' lesson, discussing what you learned during the exercise that required changes or adjustments to the plan.  The first part, "Before the exercise . . . " will be accepted by me after the fact, provided the Scout took part in a troop mobilization.  The second part, we can do in class, provided the Scout took part in a mobilization.  A statement verifying this will be accepted.
  • Requirement 8c:  Prepare a personal emergency service pack for a mobilization call.  Prepare a family kit (suitcase or waterproof box) for use by your family in case an emergency evacuation is needed.  If this was done ahead of time, I will sign it off if the Scout verifies through a signed statement by an appropriate leader.  If not, they can do this at a later date and have the Scoutmaster sign off.
  • Requiremen 9a.  Using a safety checklist approved by your counselor, inspect your home for potential hazards.  Scouts may simply conduct a common sense inspection noting findings on note paper.  We will discuss in class.
